Welcome to the Language Learning Center at the IEOP

IEOP's computer labThe Language Learning Center consists of a computer lab and a lending library. IEOP students are encouraged to use the LLC at least 2-3 hours per week to supplement their classroom learning.

LLC staff can help you choose suitable material for your studies. Our large collection includes books and audio and video recordings that can build upon and extend your classroom and out-of-class learning, and help prepare you for the TOEFL exam. We also have a selection of fiction books specially written for students of English that can be borrowed from the LLC and enjoyed in your free time.

We ask all IEOP students to follow our LLC Do's and Don'ts, and to respect Iowa State University's Code of Computer Ethics.

The LLC has Open Lab hours Monday through Friday from 3 - 5 p.m.

Return Date Reminder

If you are coming back to IEOP, you should make arrangements to return by June 1 (for summer) or August 17 (for fall).
Attendance will be taken beginning on the first day of class. If you are not there, you will be counted absent, and this will affect your in-class performance score.
The dates for the end of these sessions will be Friday, July 27, 2012 (summer) and December 14, 2012 (fall).

Increase your Vocabulary with WordEngine

WordEngineOne of the keys to a good command of English is a large vocabulary. Would you like to increase the size of your vocabulary quickly, in a way that's fun?

WordEngine is an online vocabulary learning tool for students of English. You start with a short checking program that identifies your known and unknown words. Then, you choose a course that fits your goals, such as TOEFL or Advanced English, and purchase a one-year subscription. You can study your words in three different, game-like modes. You learn not only to recognize the written word but also its spoken form.

WordEngine remembers which words you already know and helps you focus on the words you need to learn. And its spaced repetition system, based on psychologically principles, helps you put new words into long-term memory. Because the system is efficient, students can make big improvements by only studying 10 minutes per day. You also get a personal "coach" that will email hints and reminders to keep you on track.

IEOP students are eligible for discounted subscription of $19.50. To subscribe, visit this page and send your details, being sure to mention that you are a student in the IEOP at Iowa State University. Payment will be made online through PayPal.

Questions? Come see Jim in the Language Learning Center (LA 107) any time between 3-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Twenty new iMacs were installed in the lab recently and are now available for use by IEOP students.
